Mongolia’s Energy Regulatory Commission has approved a 5% price increase for electricity and heating, effective June 5th. The increase is being implemented in stages to minimize impact on consumers during periods of low demand. Electricity costs will be affected, and while consumers can adjust their usage to save on electricity, there are currently no mechanisms to reduce heating bills based on individual consumption. The Minister of Energy, B. Naidalaa, stated that Mongolia currently lacks widespread metering for heating systems. Plans are underway to begin a project to install heat meters across the country in the third quarter of this year, starting with new construction projects. The goal is to eventually implement a system where energy consumption is measured and savings are incentivized, with pricing adjusted to reflect market principles.
