Moldova is moving away from reliance on inexpensive Russian gas, according to Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu. The country has already secured the majority of its required gas supply through alternative sources. Simultaneously, the government is initiating reforms within Moldovagaz, the national gas company, aiming to consolidate its current network of twelve distribution companies into a more streamlined structure. A key aspect of this strategy involves addressing the energy needs of Transnistria, the breakaway region, by requesting it to independently build its own gas reserves. This approach signals a firm shift in Moldova’s energy policy, prioritising self-sufficiency and reducing dependence on Russia. The move reflects broader concerns about energy security in the region and the need for sustainable supply chains. These changes are designed to stabilize the energy sector and prepare Moldova for future challenges.
