Moldova’s Foreign Ministry summoned Russian Ambassador Oleg Ozerov on Thursday to protest Russia’s plans to open 16 polling stations in the breakaway region of Transnistria for upcoming Russian legislative elections. The Ministry delivered a formal note of protest, objecting to the move as a violation of Moldovan sovereignty. Moldova views the opening of polling stations in Transnistria as unacceptable, particularly without its consent. Authorities in Chișinău argue the action interferes with Moldova’s internal affairs and could further destabilize the region. The elections are scheduled to take place in Russia from September 18th to 20th. This protest highlights ongoing tensions between Moldova and Russia, particularly concerning Transnistria’s status and Russian influence within the region. Moldova has consistently asserted its sovereignty over Transnistria, which has been de facto independent since the early 1990s.
