A London auction of art from the collection of financier Joe Lewis generated $392.6 million in sales. The auction was headlined by an Amedeo Modigliani nude portrait, which achieved a new European auction record price. Wednesday’s sale included works by prominent artists such as Pablo Picasso, René Magritte, and Gustav Klimt, comprising a total of 48 pieces. The auction represents a partial liquidation of Lewis’s extensive art holdings. Lewis, formerly the majority owner of Tottenham Hotspur football club, moved his ownership stake to a family trust two years ago. The proceeds from the auction are likely to be used to cover legal costs related to insider trading charges against Lewis.
