Dutch research organization TNO and the police have launched a trial using a mobile emissions testing vehicle, nicknamed the “sniffer van,” to measure exhaust gases from trucks while in operation. The vehicle analyzes real-time emissions data collected while driving behind trucks, supplemented by stationary monitoring equipment along highways. The initiative aims to identify the most effective method for measuring emissions and ensure compliance with upcoming European regulations. Researchers note that a small percentage of trucks contribute disproportionately to overall pollution, with 10% responsible for 35-40% of nitrogen emissions, often due to maintenance issues or defects. During the trial phase, trucks exceeding emission limits will be pulled over for inspection, but drivers will receive explanations rather than fines due to the lack of current legislation. The project seeks to improve air quality by pinpointing and addressing vehicles with excessive emissions. The results will inform future enforcement strategies and contribute to cleaner transportation.
