A large-scale migration event saw approximately 2,000 migrants attempt to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco by swimming, leading to a tragic loss of at least 16 lives, with over ten still missing. Local authorities in Ceuta have requested a national state of emergency due to the overwhelming influx, a request denied by the central government which instead deployed the military to support border control. Reception centers are experiencing extreme overcrowding, exceeding capacity by 2,400%, leaving hundreds of migrants, many of them young, sleeping in the streets. Notably, some migrants reportedly shouted “Viva España” upon reaching Ceuta. The incident is prompting concern from Italy, with the government considering suspending the Schengen agreement with Spain. This event echoes a similar crisis in May 2021, when over 8,000 migrants crossed into Ceuta in just two days, and follows a pattern of over 62 deaths in the area in the last year.
