A migrant boat capsized off the coast of Libya last week, resulting in the confirmed deaths of at least eleven people, with forty others currently missing. The incident occurred on June 12th, but bodies began washing ashore near the city of Tobruk in northeastern Libya only within the last 24 hours. Libyan rescue workers and the coast guard are actively recovering remains. The origin point of the vessel remains unknown, though ten migrants reportedly survived the shipwreck, according to the aid organization Al-Abreen. The nationalities of both the survivors and the deceased have not been released. The Libyan coast has become a major departure point for migrants attempting to reach Europe, often traveling on dangerously overcrowded boats facilitated by human smugglers. As of mid-May, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) recorded 800 deaths and missing persons on this migration route, and those intercepted face potential abuse in Libyan detention centers.
