Dutch authorities are installing cameras on the Merwedebrug bridge to enforce a recently implemented ban on truck traffic. Despite the indefinite closure for trucks since last Saturday due to weakened steel construction, many continue to use the bridge. Fines for violations will be 500 euros. The decision to close the bridge to heavier vehicles came after an inspection revealed the steel was weaker than previously thought, posing a risk of deformation under pressure. Authorities are collaborating with police and the Public Prosecution Service for enforcement, utilizing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology. Passenger cars, motorcycles, vans, buses, and emergency services are exempt from the ban and can still use the bridge. Truck traffic is being diverted to the A16 and A2 highways.
