Despite being severely debilitated by Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), Anil van der Zee has become a crucial voice for those suffering from post-acute infection syndromes. He received a royal distinction from the Amsterdam mayor for his tireless advocacy and knowledge-sharing. Living in near total isolation due to the extreme fatigue caused by his condition, Van der Zee combats misinformation and educates professionals and the public through online platforms. He is credited with significantly increasing awareness of ME, long COVID, Q-fever fatigue syndrome, post-sepsis, and Lyme disease. Patient organizations, advocacy groups, and scientists nominated him for the honor, recognizing his impact on the growing understanding of these conditions. Despite limited medical help available to patients, Van der Zee’s work provides a critical source of information and validation for many.
