A luxury resort in the Dominican Republic, the Viva Dominicus Beach by Wyndham, has been almost entirely destroyed by a massive fire. Nearly 1,700 tourists were evacuated from the popular southeast coast destination. Local media reports that a 46-year-old Italian tourist died in the blaze, while several other guests required medical attention. Authorities state that strong winds and thatched roofs allowed the fire to spread rapidly. Displaced tourists have been relocated to other hotels. An investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway. Meanwhile, a neighboring resort owned by the same chain remained undamaged and continues to operate.
