Mali’s Transport Ministry will begin a special registration operation on June 15th for all two and three-wheeled vehicles lacking proper licensing, following a June 10th decision citing current security imperatives. This follows an earlier ban, implemented June 3rd, prohibiting motorcycles 125cc and larger from operating outside of major cities. The government justified the restrictions as part of its counter-terrorism efforts, as motorcycles are frequently used by extremist groups. However, the ban has sparked significant backlash due to the vital role motorcycles play in transportation, particularly in rural areas. Implementation of the ban has been inconsistent across the country nearly ten days after its enactment. The registration drive aims to address the lack of vehicle identification, but the initial ban’s uneven enforcement raises questions about its overall effectiveness.
