The Malaysian government has introduced a bill to amend existing legislation regarding child sexual offences. The proposed Sexual Offences against Children (Amendment) Bill 2026 aims to extend Malaysia’s legal jurisdiction to cover such crimes committed by its citizens abroad. Currently, prosecuting these offences when they occur outside of Malaysia is challenging. The amendment seeks to close this legal gap, allowing for prosecution within the Malaysian legal system regardless of where the abuse takes place. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, presented the bill to the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday. This move signals a stronger stance against child sexual exploitation and a commitment to holding offenders accountable, even when crimes are committed internationally. The bill’s progression through parliament will be closely watched by advocacy groups.
