A shift in global research dominance is underway, with Asia—particularly China—increasingly becoming the focal point of scientific advancement. Professor Ahmad Zuhairi Abdullah of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in Penang notes a significant change from two decades ago, when Western institutions led in research infrastructure and breakthroughs. Malaysia is responding to this shift by building a new research corridor across Asia. This corridor aims to foster collaboration and keep pace with China’s rapid scientific rise. The initiative acknowledges the growing importance of Asian research and seeks to position Malaysia as a key player in the evolving geopolitical landscape of science and technology. This move reflects a broader trend of research and development gravitating towards the East.
