An alternative design for the New Stage of the National Theatre in Prague, predating the now-iconic brutalist structure, has resurfaced. This previously unknown plan aimed for a more sensitive integration with the historic National Theatre building and the surrounding National Avenue. The design featured a mirrored wall, intended to create a visual connection while respecting the existing architecture. However, the project was abandoned following a car accident involving the renowned architect behind the proposal. Details of this “forgotten” design are being highlighted as part of a series focusing on unbuilt architectural projects in Prague. The plan represents a contrasting vision to the ultimately constructed New Stage, which became both a symbol of its era and a subject of debate. This discovery offers a glimpse into what could have been for one of Prague’s most prominent cultural landmarks.
