The Intelligent Community Forum (ICF) has awarded the title of “smartest region” globally to Limburg, Netherlands, recognizing the success of its Brightlands campuses. These four campuses, located in Maastricht, Sittard-Geleen, Heerlen, and Venlo, focus on research in areas such as health, AI, sustainable chemistry, and food security. The ICF, a global network supporting innovation in cities and regions, praised Limburg's collaborative approach between government, businesses, and knowledge institutions. The award acknowledges Limburg’s successful transition following the decline of its mining industry, particularly after the discovery of natural gas in 1959. Brightlands campuses, initiated in 2014, have revitalized the region, each specializing in a specific field and leveraging existing infrastructure like the Floriade in Venlo and facilities in Chemelot. Limburg competed with six other finalists, including a region in Assai, Brazil, to achieve this prestigious recognition.
