Two former councilors in Lelystad, Netherlands, resigned in January following a contentious debate regarding internal organizational unrest. An investigation, commissioned by the mayor and conducted by Necker, has revealed a pattern of intimidating and demeaning behavior by both Dennis Grimbergen and Annemiek Messelink-Dijkstra while in office. The reports detail instances of disparaging remarks towards municipal employees and leadership, with Messelink-Dijkstra reportedly claiming sole expertise and using phrases like “I am the boss” to enforce her decisions. Grimbergen allegedly used insulting language, referring to colleagues as “senile” and the management team as “randdebielen” (roughly translated as ‘idiots’). The investigation found this behavior contributed to a work environment stifling dissent and disregarding professional advice. Both former councilors dispute the findings, with Grimbergen largely denying the accusations. The reports were made public following their resignations, which occurred as they faced a potential vote of no confidence.
