Lebanon and Israel are engaged in direct negotiations, initiated in April and taking place in Washington, aimed at resolving ongoing hostilities, particularly those involving Hezbollah. Lebanese President Najib Mikati has affirmed that these discussions are proceeding independently of the broader diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran. The talks represent a rare instance of direct communication between the two countries, which do not have formal diplomatic relations. While the US is facilitating the discussions, Lebanon insists its negotiations are not contingent on, or linked to, the outcome of the US-Iran nuclear deal talks. The primary goal is to delineate a maritime border to address competing claims over offshore energy resources. Progress remains uncertain, but the continuation of dialogue is viewed as a positive step towards de-escalation.
