Pakistani lawyers Imaan Mazari-Hazir and Hadi Ali Chattha are appealing a 17-year sentence related to social media posts deemed to support terrorist groups. The pair were initially sentenced in January by an Islamabad sessions court under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca). They subsequently sought suspension of the sentence from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in February, but the plea was denied. Now, they have petitioned the Supreme Court for an expedited hearing of their appeal, citing the urgency of the matter and relevant provisions of the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Act 2023. Their arrest in January, following a protest outside the IHC, drew criticism from rights groups and political figures. The appeal argues that criminal matters, particularly those concerning sentence suspension, should be prioritized by the court. The lawyers are currently incarcerated while awaiting the outcome of the legal proceedings.
