Restoration efforts have begun at Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a historic Orthodox monastery complex damaged by a Russian attack on Monday. Initial work is focused on repairing the roof of the Dormition Cathedral, a key structure within the Lavra. A primary concern is protecting the monastery’s valuable collection of icons from further damage. Maksym Ostapenko, the director of the complex, estimates the complete reconstruction could take up to two years. The attack caused significant damage to the monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a significant religious and cultural landmark in Ukraine. Authorities are prioritizing the preservation of both the building and its irreplaceable religious artifacts. The ongoing restoration represents a commitment to rebuilding Ukrainian cultural heritage amid the conflict.
