Defence lawyers for Hashim Thaci, the former President of Kosovo, and four co-defendants have petitioned for acquittal in their trial concerning obstruction of justice. The defence argued the charges stem from conversations, not actual intimidation of witnesses. They maintain that the alleged actions did not constitute a criminal attempt to obstruct the proceedings of the Specialist Prosecutor’s Office in Kosovo. Lawyers emphasized the lack of concrete evidence demonstrating an intent to influence or frighten potential witnesses. The prosecution alleges Thaci and his co-defendants attempted to conceal information regarding alleged crimes committed during and after the Kosovo War. The Specialist Prosecutor’s Office was established to investigate and prosecute alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity linked to the Kosovo Liberation Army. A ruling on the defence’s request for acquittal is pending before the court.
