Preliminary assessments indicate that wetland encroachment and a blocked stream near Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi likely exacerbated recent flooding on campus. The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) identified the issues as contributing factors to the overflow of the Wewe River. Consequently, KNUST and NADMO have initiated dredging works to clear the blocked stream channel and address the encroachment. This action aims to mitigate future flood risks to the university and surrounding areas. The assessment suggests the natural waterway’s obstruction significantly worsened the impact of recent rainfall. Authorities hope the dredging will restore the stream’s capacity and prevent similar incidents. Further investigations may follow to address the underlying causes of the encroachment.
