Kericho County is transforming its cooperative societies to spearhead rural industrialization and economic growth, aligning with the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). Traditionally focused on marketing, these cooperatives are now expanding into value addition activities across key sectors. These include coffee processing, dairy production, maize milling, sugar development, and livestock value chains. The shift aims to foster enterprise development and accelerate economic progress throughout the region. This move signifies a strategic effort to move beyond simply producing raw materials, and instead capitalize on local resources through processing and manufacturing. The county government views cooperatives as essential drivers for realizing BETA’s goals of inclusive economic expansion. This model could become a blueprint for other rural areas in Kenya.
