The villain Karbonkel from the 1990s Dutch children’s television show *Ik Mik Loreland* is now restored and on display at the Beeld & Geluid museum in Hilversum, stirring up childhood memories—and trauma—for many Dutch millennials. The show, which aired between 1994 and 2002, aimed to help third-grade students learn to read by having them find letters stolen by the one-eyed troll Karbonkel. However, the character proved too frightening for some, prompting tears, fear, and classroom disruptions. Broadcaster NOT responded to the criticism by making Karbonkel less menacing, removing the fish, and eventually replacing the puppet with a human actor. Despite these changes, Karbonkel left a lasting impression, described by one former viewer as “one of the biggest bogeymen of my generation.” The Beeld & Geluid museum was aware of the strong reactions to the puppet, with visitors often having strong feelings about the display.
