A security guard died in Karachi on Wednesday when an under-construction segment of the Red Line project collapsed near Baitul Mukarram mosque in Gulshan-i-Iqbal. Rescue 1122 responded to the incident after receiving a report at the Central Command and Control Centre. The collapse occurred as work continued on the crucial BRT Red Line, designed to span 27 kilometers from Malir Halt to Numaish via University Road. Originally slated for completion in 2023, the project has faced numerous delays, now extended to the end of 2026, due to issues including contractor disputes, rising costs, and land acquisition challenges. Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon recently stated efforts are underway to resume work and alleviate the daily hardship faced by University Road commuters. This latest incident raises concerns about safety and further complicates the already protracted timeline of the Rs79 billion project, initially announced in 2017.
