Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) has announced a nationwide strike on September 3rd to protest the government’s petroleum levy, accusing the ruling party of exploiting the public. Party Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman warned that continued inaction could lead to a long march toward Islamabad. The protests, initially focused on three cities, have expanded across the country, with sit-ins and demonstrations gaining momentum. Rehman urged supporters to escalate their efforts, criticizing the government’s governance and demanding relief from rising fuel costs, as well as renegotiation of Independent Power Producer (IPP) agreements. The JI is also focusing on issues beyond the fuel levy, including addressing what they call a “flour mafia” and governmental negligence, citing a recent tragedy at PIMS hospital. Rehman emphasized the strike would be peaceful, but reiterated the demand for the government to address public concerns or face further action.
