A new musical and dance genre called “Biama” is rapidly gaining popularity among Ivorian youth. Originating in the Yopougon district of Abidjan, Biama has quickly become a national phenomenon. While influenced by the earlier “coupé-décalé” style, Biama distinguishes itself through its accessibility, being performed in public spaces and widely shared on social media platforms like TikTok. This contrasts with coupé-décalé, traditionally associated with nightclubs. Biama’s appeal lies in its ability to reach a younger, working-class audience with ease. The grassroots nature of the trend is fueling its swift spread across Ivory Coast, captivating a generation through dance.
