Italy has firmly declined to participate in a NATO-led initiative, known as PURL, aimed at streamlining prioritized arms deliveries to Ukraine from the United States. Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stated Rome has consistently opposed this mechanism since its inception. The country’s position regarding joint procurement of American weaponry for Ukraine remains unchanged. Italy’s decision signals a continued reluctance to engage in collective arms purchasing for the conflict. Crosetto’s comments underscore a consistent national stance on the matter. This refusal does not, however, indicate a shift in Italy’s overall support for Ukraine, but rather a disagreement on the method of arms provision. The PURL initiative seeks to expedite and coordinate weapon supplies, but Italy prefers alternative approaches.
