Italy has given the green light to a joint drone manufacturing venture between Leonardo, its state-controlled defense company, and Turkish firm Baykar. The new company, LBA Systems, will be a 50-50 partnership. However, the Italian government has implemented national security stipulations regarding the sale and international distribution of the drones produced. These restrictions limit sales exclusively to nations that maintain political alignment with both Europe and NATO member states. The approval, granted by the Italian cabinet on Tuesday, utilized special powers to facilitate the agreement. This move balances economic cooperation with strategic security concerns, reflecting a cautious approach to defense partnerships. The venture aims to bolster Italy’s drone capabilities while safeguarding its geopolitical interests.
