Israeli airstrikes hit an airbase in northwestern Syria on Tuesday, targeting the runway and storage facilities at Abu al-Duhur base, according to Syrian state media. While Syrian sources reported no casualties, the Israeli military has not commented. The US envoy for the region, Ambassador Tom Barrack, expressed deep concern, labeling the strikes an “unnecessary escalation” that undermines regional stability and advocating for restraint and dialogue. The airbase, inactive as an airfield since 2013, now serves as a training center for the Syrian army following years of civil war. Israel has a history of striking targets in Syria, previously to curb Iranian influence and, more recently, amid heightened tensions with Turkey over the region. The strikes occur following increasingly sharp rhetoric between Israel and Turkiye regarding Syria, raising concerns about further instability.
