Despite a recently announced ceasefire intended to end months of conflict in the Middle East, Israel conducted deadly airstrikes in southern Lebanon on Saturday, resulting in at least sixteen fatalities. The strikes occurred after a period of reduced violence following an agreement brokered by Iran and the United States. The renewed hostilities threaten to derail the peace accord, which explicitly included a cessation of fighting “on all fronts, including Lebanon.” Israel stated it targeted positions of Hezbollah in retaliation for attacks on its soldiers. Hezbollah, while not claiming responsibility for recent attacks, asserted its right to respond to Israeli aggression. The Lebanese army also reported the death of one of its soldiers. The situation remains volatile as both sides accuse the other of violating the ceasefire terms.
