The U.S. Department of Justice has unsealed updated charges against 17 individuals allegedly connected to an Iran-backed hacking operation. These individuals are accused of carrying out cyberattacks and stealing data from U.S. universities, companies, and government agencies. The DOJ states the hackers worked with the Mabna Institute, a company acting on behalf of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. These campaigns were also undertaken for other Iranian government entities and universities. The unsealed charges provide further detail on previously known Iranian cyber activities. This action highlights ongoing U.S. efforts to counter cyber threats originating from Iran. The accused individuals now face criminal prosecution in the United States.
