A cultural network within Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), Indonesia’s largest Islamic organization, is campaigning for the inclusion of female scholars in Ahlul Halli wal Aqdi (AHWA). The Janur network is pushing for this change at the upcoming 35th NU Muktamar (congress) being held at the Bahrul Ulum Islamic boarding school in Jombang. AHWA is NU’s highest decision-making council, traditionally composed exclusively of male clerics. Advocates believe incorporating women’s perspectives would enrich the organization's deliberations and leadership. This proposal marks a significant step towards greater gender representation within Indonesia's influential Islamic community. The move reflects a broader discussion on women’s roles and leadership in religious institutions. This initiative seeks to modernize NU and recognize the substantial contributions of female Islamic scholars.
