A joint effort by the West Kalimantan conservation agency and the Indonesian non-profit YIARI has resulted in the successful evacuation of 51 orangutans. The orangutans were rescued from various locations within the West Kalimantan province of Indonesia between August 6th and October 19th. The rescue operation highlights the ongoing threat posed by fires to orangutan populations in Indonesia. The animals were removed from areas impacted by blazes, though specifics regarding the fire causes and extent of habitat damage haven't been released. Rescuers worked tirelessly to locate and safely transport the orangutans to secure environments. The operation underscores the critical need for continued conservation efforts to protect Indonesia’s vulnerable wildlife from the increasing frequency and intensity of wildfires.
