Drusilla Carr, an Indiana widow with limited formal education, tirelessly defended her 120-acre property along Lake Michigan for over 20 years. Facing constant legal challenges as the city of Gary grew and the land’s value increased, Carr fought to retain ownership. Her determination stemmed from a deep connection to the land and a refusal to relinquish her claim. Despite facing numerous obstacles, she successfully protected her property during her lifetime. Decades after her passing, a portion of Carr’s land was incorporated into a significant 212-acre donation. This donation ultimately became protected as part of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, preserving the landscape she so fiercely defended. Carr's legacy now includes the thriving natural space enjoyed by many.
