India’s Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, resigned his post on Saturday, bringing an end to days of protests led by young people. The protests were spearheaded by a movement self-dubbed the “Jooms,” a name adopted after a government official derisively referred to unemployed youth as such. The “Jooms” demanded the minister’s removal following irregularities in May’s university entrance exams and other alleged violations. Demonstrations had been ongoing in the capital, Delhi, for several weeks, culminating in clashes with police that left many injured. Prominent activist Sonam Wangchuk ended a 26-day hunger strike after receiving assurances from authorities that protestors injured during clashes would not be punished. This unrest presents a significant challenge to the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has been in power since 2014.
