India and the United States have finalized a deal for India to acquire FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank missile systems, as confirmed by the US Embassy in India. The systems, produced by Lockheed Martin and RTX, are “fire-and-forget” weapons effective against armored vehicles and already utilized by the US military and allies. While the deal's financial value remains undisclosed, US Ambassador Sergio Gor highlighted the agreement as strengthening the growing defence partnership between the two nations and fostering industrial collaboration. The Javelin system employs a unique top-attack profile, maximizing damage to vulnerable areas of enemy armour. Despite recent trade tensions and geopolitical complexities, the defence relationship between India and the US appears resilient, underscored by a ten-year defence framework established in October. India, a major global arms importer, continues to modernize its military capabilities through such acquisitions, remaining the fifth-largest military spender worldwide.
