India has temporarily blocked the messaging app Telegram nationwide due to concerns about widespread cheating on medical school entrance exams. The Ministry of Education announced the ban on Tuesday, stating it will remain in effect until June 22nd. Authorities allege the platform was being used to share question papers and facilitate fraudulent activity related to the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Telegram founder Pavel Durov criticized the move, asserting it impacted tens of millions of users without addressing the core issue of exam security. The ban follows reports of leaked exam papers circulating on the platform, prompting calls for stricter measures to ensure fair testing practices. Despite the block, Durov suggests the problem of cheating persists and hasn’t been resolved by this action. The government aims to prevent further dissemination of illicit exam materials through the platform.
