The International Labour Organization (ILO) has adopted the first global treaty focused on the burgeoning gig economy. The “Decent Work in the Platform Economy Convention” seeks to provide labour protections to the hundreds of millions of workers engaged through digital platforms. This treaty aims to address the unique challenges faced by these workers, who often lack traditional employment benefits and safeguards. Key areas of focus include establishing standards related to working conditions, social security, and the right to collective bargaining. The convention is intended to ensure fair treatment and decent work for individuals employed through apps and online platforms. It represents a significant step towards adapting labour laws to the realities of the modern, digitally-driven workforce. The ILO hopes member states will ratify and implement the convention to improve conditions for platform workers globally.
