Senegalese security forces conducted a major operation on June 24, 2026, targeting illegal gold mining in the Saraya department’s Madina Baffé commune. The operation, carried out by the GARSI 2 detachment based in Madina Baffé, successfully dismantled several illegal mining sites in the Fadougou area. Authorities seized a significant amount of equipment used in illicit gold extraction, including ten generators, thirteen jackhammers, eight water pumps, six water pumps, seven solar panels, and four fittings. This action is part of a broader effort to combat illegal gold mining, a significant challenge in the Kédougou region. The government aims to protect the environment and natural resources from the damaging effects of unauthorized mining activities. Further surveillance and control operations are planned for the affected area.
