The White House announced the retirement of one of two specially equipped Boeing 747 aircraft that have served as Air Force One for over 30 years. The move suggests the impending use of a newer Boeing 747 gifted by Qatar’s ruling family, a gift that previously sparked ethical and security concerns. White House Communications Director Stephen Cheung and State Department Protocol Chief Monica Crowley both posted farewell messages on social media, acknowledging the plane’s long history of transporting presidents from George H.W. Bush onward. While not the most modern aircraft, it was considered comfortable and provided memorable service. The aircraft was recently tested after being gifted by Qatar, and may be used for President Trump’s upcoming visit to Mount Rushmore. The fate of the remaining original Air Force One aircraft is currently unknown. The acceptance of such an expensive gift from a foreign entity had previously raised ethical questions regarding presidential security and propriety.
