ICC Prosecutor Mame Mandiaye Niang has responded to criticisms leveled against the International Criminal Court, particularly regarding its relationship with African nations. In an interview with BBC News Afrique, Niang firmly stated the ICC is not against Africa. He addressed concerns raised by the African Export-Import Bank (AES) and recent withdrawals of several African states from the Rome Statute. Niang emphasized the importance of the principle of complementarity, where the ICC intervenes only when national jurisdictions are unable or unwilling to genuinely investigate and prosecute serious crimes. He also pointed out that many ICC investigations in Africa were initiated at the request of the African states themselves, rejecting accusations of unwarranted interference. The prosecutor aims to clarify the court’s role and address misconceptions surrounding its work on the continent.
