Hungary has once again reduced operations at its sole nuclear power plant, Paks, leaving only one reactor functioning. Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced the move, citing historically low water levels in the Danube River as the primary cause. The reduced capacity means the plant is now producing only 240 megawatts. This marks a significant reduction in Hungary’s energy production and a first in 44 years for the plant’s operation. The low Danube levels impact the plant's cooling systems, necessitating the operational adjustments. This situation raises concerns about Hungary’s energy security and potential reliance on alternative sources. The plant’s reduced output highlights the vulnerability of nuclear energy to climate change-related issues, like prolonged drought.
