Hungary is struggling to meet European Union waste management commitments due to low participation in its bio-waste collection pilot program. Despite distributing bins to 230,000 households, only 10% of mixed kitchen waste is currently being separated for organic recycling. The government, hesitant to implement potentially unpopular measures before recent elections, has now seen the pilot program stall. Mohu, the managing organization, has reportedly slowed down implementation due to the limited success. This lack of progress raises concerns about Hungary’s ability to fulfill its EU obligations regarding bio-waste. Experts suggest mandatory selective collection may be necessary to achieve the required targets. The government's initial reluctance to enforce stricter rules appears to be hindering environmental goals.
