A new report from the World Weather Attribution (WWA) network concludes that the current record-breaking heatwave in Europe would have been virtually impossible 50 years ago, directly linking the extreme weather to human-caused climate change. Researchers emphasize that the intensity of the heat is a direct consequence of increasing global temperatures driven by human activity. The report warns that further heat records, including potentially in Sweden, are likely to be broken in the coming days. Lead author Friederike Otto, a climate professor at Imperial College London, stated that what was once considered impossible is now occurring. The study highlights the accelerating impact of climate change on extreme weather events globally. This analysis underscores the urgent need for mitigation efforts to address the root causes of rising temperatures and prevent increasingly severe heatwaves.
