A series of attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels on Saudi Arabia this morning injured 73 people, according to Saudi authorities. The Saudi-led coalition fighting against the Houthis in Yemen reports that civilian targets and economic facilities were among those hit. The attacks occurred in and around the Saudi cities of Abha, Jazan, Najran, and Khamis Mushait. The Saudi Ministry of Energy stated several energy facilities in the south of the Kingdom were targeted causing fires and temporary shutdowns. The Houthis claimed responsibility, alleging Saudi Arabia attacked a prison in the Al Jawf province of Yemen. These attacks represent a new escalation in the Yemen conflict, following the end of a four-year-long ceasefire, and come amidst increased fighting between the Houthis and government forces supported by Saudi Arabia. The Yemeni civil war began in 2014, and has resulted in an estimated 150,000 deaths and multiple instances of near-famine conditions.
