The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced the end of the hantavirus outbreak that occurred aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship in April. The outbreak, which affected thirteen people, resulted in three deaths including a Dutch couple. The virus, identified as the Andes variant common to South America, is rarely transmitted person-to-person, and the mechanism of transmission remains unknown. While potentially causing severe respiratory and cardiac issues, no new infections have been reported among the 30 people previously monitored. The WHO tracked over 650 contacts across 33 countries and territories connected to the cases. The organization continues to collaborate with governments to understand the outbreak’s origins and the hantavirus itself, with initial reports suggesting the Dutch couple may have contracted it during a birdwatching excursion in Ushuaia, Argentina.
