Lucas Gallitto, GSMA’s Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, has expressed concern over legal uncertainty impacting the telecommunications industry in Guatemala. He emphasized that legal clarity is crucial for an industry making long-term investments, often spanning two decades. According to GSMA studies, the price paid for the 700 MHz band in Guatemala was at 95% of the Latin American median. This suggests Guatemala’s pricing was competitive regionally, but the ongoing legal concerns threaten future investment. Gallitto’s statement underscores the importance of a stable regulatory environment to attract and sustain growth in the sector. The lack of legal certainty is placing the entire Guatemalan telecommunications industry on alert, potentially hindering future development and expansion.
