Greek shipowner Nikos Tsakos has emphasized the importance of flying the Greek flag for the nation’s Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs), citing both national and geopolitical reasons. Two newly built VLCC tankers, named “Euroleague 26” and “NY Knicks 26”, will operate under the Greek flag for TEN, Tsakos’ company. Tsakos stated that Greek shipowners aspire to demonstrate national pride alongside their commercial success. He believes a strong Greek-flagged fleet is crucial for maintaining Greece’s prominent position in the global maritime industry. This move is seen as a boost for the Greek registry and a statement of commitment to the country’s maritime heritage. The decision reflects a desire to strengthen Greece’s influence in the shipping sector and reinforce its national interests.
