Greece’s Ministry of Environment and Energy (YPEΝ) is launching a pilot project to integrate renewable energy sources with pumped storage and desalination technology. The project aims to address both water scarcity and energy storage challenges, particularly for its islands. It will combine electricity generated from renewables to power desalination units, producing fresh water for local consumption. Excess energy will be used for pumped hydro storage – pumping water uphill to a reservoir, and releasing it to generate electricity when needed. This innovative approach seeks to create a sustainable, self-sufficient system for island communities. The pilot study will inform the broader deployment of such integrated systems across the Greek islands, supporting energy independence and environmental sustainability. This initiative marks a step toward a more resilient and eco-friendly infrastructure for Greece’s island regions.
