Former Nigerian Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, has responded to criticism regarding his handling of the 1966-1967 killings of Igbo people in Northern Nigeria. Gowon stated that accusations he did not adequately attempt to halt the violence, or pursue justice for the perpetrators, are inaccurate. The events, widely referred to as the Igbo pogrom, resulted in significant loss of life and contributed to the tensions leading up to the Nigerian Civil War. Gowon maintains the federal government did attempt to address the situation and bring those responsible to justice. His statement comes as a response to ongoing debate and scrutiny over his role during this turbulent period in Nigerian history. The issue remains sensitive and continues to be a point of contention within Nigeria. Vanguard News published his response.
